HIGHLIGHTS OF EMERGENCY OAUSU SRC SITTING

By Ayoola Omole

CONSIDERED MOTIONS

1. That the President of OAUSU, Oyekan Ibunkun (Dr. IBK) writes an apology letter sequel to his dereliction towards dictates of the constitution, pertaining to the procurement of a 14-seater bus as part of his administration's plans to cushion the effect of transportation complications faced by students, especially those who reside and transit off campus after daily  activities.

2. The President be suspended for two weeks, within the period which a constituted committee investigates issues surrounding #busgate (procedure leading to the purchase of the said bus) and submit a report conveying  recommendations to the Parliament on the next line of action.

*VOTING*
After a smooth voting session participated in by 69 out of a total of 82 representatives who were there seated, the first motion accrued 29 votes while the second accrued 40 votes, which by implication suspends the president and paves way for the intervention of an investigative committee.

Jubilation rocked Awo Cafe upon the counting of votes but before the speaker could announce the outcome of the votes and set up an investigative committee,  electricity went out, again, as has been the case during previous parliamentary sittings, totalling three,  spelling prematurely -a technical end to the sitting as students trooped in various directions.

According to reports, which cannot be confirmed by *ATTENCAO*,the speaker and other members of the House would later reconvene at the health center the same evening and consequently pronounce the suspension of the president. Whether or not the suspension of the president would take effect  therefore remains an open question as far as the legality of that move is concerned.

*REACTIONS*
Going by responses to a question ATTENCAO put on a social media platform as to  the power outage which had now become familiar with parliamentary sittings, we can gather that  80 % of the respondents believe that 'the familiar power outage' was staged and therefore a manifestation of conspiracy rather than coincidence.

In a chat with the Chairman Budgetary and Finance committee OAUSU, and former chairman, Audit Committee, Faculty of Art, Hon. Wale Oladebo who is of the opinion that such investigative committee can and should conduct investigations on #busgate before the suspension of the president, with the view of avoidance of administrative lapses,in the interest of the all, charged members of the the union to shun hypothetical assumptions and maintain an objective approach towards the evaluation of the matters on ground.

Asked what implications of the speaker's inability to proclaim the president's suspension were,  he said "Votes were cast, but a speakership declaration is left to that effect".
"If you are following the political trends on this campus, you will understand that this scenario is similar to that of the first congress where it was contained in the congressional resolution that the president declared the speaker suspended,  the same way I will not be surprised if the parliamentary resolution says the president has been declared suspended by the speaker".

The story of how Nigeria’s census figures became weaponized - Feyi Fawehinmi

By Feyi Fawehinmi The story of Nigeria’s 1962 census never gets old. Southern politicians seeking to end the north’s dominance of Nigerian politics decided that the only way to do it was through the census. Population figures at the time determined not only parliamentary representation but also revenue allocation and employee distribution in the civil service. In May 1962, the first census under an independent Nigerian government began. There had been a frenzy of mobilization by politicians in the south of the country using pamphlets, radio, schools, churches and mosques. Although the final results were not made public, the preliminary results were quite clear as to what had happened: the north’s population had gone up from 16.5 million in the last census in 1952 to 22.5 million, an increase of 30%. But in some parts of the east, the population had increased by up to 200% and more than 70% in general. The west also reported an increase of 70%. What the preliminary results showed...

Boko Haram’s campaign against education and enlightenment - By Landry Signe

Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Boko Haram, the Islamist terrorist group originating from Nigeria is frightened by this enlightening power of education. Unsurprisingly, on Monday, February 19, the group, whose name often translates to “Western education is a sin,” stormed a girls’ school in the village of Dapchi in northern Nigeria to abduct students. Of the 907 schoolgirls who were in the school the day of the attack, more than 100 are still missing as of Sunday. Since it became violent about a decade ago, Boko Haram’s actions, through these and other types of bloody attacks, have resulted in horrifying consequences. Human Rights Watch estimates that Boko Haram has left at least 7 million in need of humanitarian assistance, 2.1 million displaced, and 20,000 civilians dead. Local leaders claim the number is significantly higher. Despite such causalities, it took Boko Haram’s massive kidnapping of 276 sch...
